Psalm 14

New International Version

Psalm 14^(A)

For the director of music. Of David.

¹The fool^[a] says in his heart,
“There is no God.”^(B)
They are corrupt, their deeds are vile;
there is no one who does good.

²The Lord looks down from heaven^(C)
    on all mankind
to see if there are any who understand,^(D)
    any who seek God.^(E)
³All have turned away,^(F) all have become corrupt;^(G)
    there is no one who does good,^(H)
    not even one.^(I)

⁴Do all these evildoers know nothing?^(J)

They devour my people^(K) as though eating bread;
    they never call on the Lord.^(L)
⁵But there they are, overwhelmed with dread,
    for God is present in the company of the righteous.
⁶You evildoers frustrate the plans of the poor,
    but the Lord is their refuge.^(M)

⁷Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion!^(N)
When the Lord restores^(O) his people,
let Jacob rejoice and Israel be glad!

⁶When the Ammonites realized that they had become obnoxious^(A) to David, they hired twenty thousand Aramean^(B) foot soldiers from Beth Rehob^(C) and Zobah,^(D) as well as the king of Maakah^(E) with a thousand men, and also twelve thousand men from Tob.^(F)

⁷On hearing this, David sent Joab^(G) out with the entire army of fighting men. ⁸The Ammonites came out and drew up in battle formation at the entrance of their city gate, while the Arameans of Zobah and Rehob and the men of Tob and Maakah were by themselves in the open country.

⁹Joab saw that there were battle lines in front of him and behind him; so he selected some of the best troops in Israel and deployed them against the Arameans. ¹⁰He put the rest of the men under the command of Abishai^(H) his brother and deployed them against the Ammonites. ¹¹Joab said, “If the Arameans are too strong for me, then you are to come to my rescue; but if the Ammonites are too strong for you, then I will come to rescue you. ¹²Be strong,^(I) and let us fight bravely for our people and the cities of our God. The Lord will do what is good in his sight.”^(J)

¹²Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves^(A) with compassion, kindness, humility,^(B) gentleness and patience.^(C) ¹³Bear with each other^(D) and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.^(E) ¹⁴And over all these virtues put on love,^(F) which binds them all together in perfect unity.^(G)

¹⁵Let the peace of Christ^(H) rule in your hearts, since as members of one body^(I) you were called to peace.^(J) And be thankful. ¹⁶Let the message of Christ^(K) dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom^(L) through psalms,^(M) hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.^(N) ¹⁷And whatever you do,^(O) whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks^(P) to God the Father through him.
